Wisconsin, renowned for its dairy farms and agricultural expertise, has a rich history of families dedicated to farming and related industries. One such story is that of the Weisenbeck Burnside Dairy farm and their collaboration with industry leaders like Bob Biederman of Cemstone Ready Mix.
The Burnside Dairy Farm has been a cornerstone of Wisconsin farming since 1919. “We’re fourth generation,” says Paul Weisenbeck proudly. Paul runs the operation alongside his brothers, Jason and Billy. “My dad and our uncle farmed together, and in 1996, my dad purchased the whole farm. Jason and I decided at that point we would come back and help run the operation. Billy joined a couple of years later.” Today, the farm boasts an impressive 1,700 adult cows, milking around 1,500 Holstein-Jersey crosses, with plans to expand further. This growth is a far cry from their humble beginnings, where they managed only 60 milking cows in 1996. The year 2000 marked a pivotal moment for the Weiseneck family, as they upgraded to a double-16 parlor, later expanding to a double-24 parlor to accommodate their growing herd.
Innovation has always been at the heart of the Burnside Dairy. The introduction of advanced milking parlors significantly improved their efficiency. Additionally, they implemented a sophisticated manure management system to optimize nutrient recycling. “The goal is to have 6 to 7 months of storage in the lagoon, so we only need to apply manure during the spring and fall,” explains Paul. “This way, we maximize the nutrients from manure instead of viewing it as waste.”
When it came time to expand the manure pit and barn, Ashley Pattison, Project Manager for Komro Sales and Service, Durand, Wisconsin, knew they needed a reliable partner to work with. With the current expansion completed, the Burnside Dairy farm will continue to look for ways to innovate and improve their operations. “We plan on adding a couple hundred more cows over the next few years,” Paul shares. “But after that, we’re pretty happy with our size and just want to keep it as is for now.” Their story is one of dedication, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
