2023 Intern Spotlight– Daniel Monaghan
University of Minnesota Chemical Engineering student, Daniel Monaghan, interned with Cemstone’s Environmental group over the summer of 2023. Monaghan worked with various groups under the guidance of Alex Olin, Cemstone’s Environmental Facilities & Engineering Manager, on a project partnership between Cemstone and MnTAP that analyzed energy efficiency.
Project goal:To develop and implement industry-tailored solutions that prevent pollution at the source, maximize efficient use of resources, reduce energy use, and reduce costs to improve public health and the environment.
Monaghan analyzed and assessed a mining site, a ready-mix concrete plant, and a bagging facility for energy reducing solutions. He was impactful in establishing and recommending the final solutions which were presented to MnTAP and Cemstone Executives.
Monaghan says, “This internship allowed me to develop my engineering skills that are difficult to develop in a classroom setting. These skills include communication of ideas, economic analysis of projects, and analysis of industrial equipment. I’m thankful to MnTAP and Cemstone for giving me the opportunity to grow as an Engineer.”
