INSPECTION CHECKLIST: WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Before using any electrical cord or device, ensure the following:
• Extension cords have three wires, including a ground.
• The ground pin is intact on all male plugs.
• Insulation is complete with no cracks or breaks.
• Plugs and receptacles are securely attached to the cord.
• All internal wires are continuous and undamaged.
• Cords are protected from crushing in doors, windows, or pinch points.
• No metal electrical boxes with knockouts are used on cords.
• Plugs are dead-front (molded or securely fastened).
• Cords are not stapled, nailed, or hung in a way that can cause damage.
• Bushings are used when cords pass through holes in covers or boxes.
BEST PRACTICES TO PREVENT ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
To reduce your risk—and the risk to your team—follow these safe work practices:
• Inspect tools and cords before every use.
• Never use a tool with the ground prong removed.
• Avoid operating power tools while standing in water.
• Keep extension cords out of water entirely.
• Treat all power lines as energized; avoid contact.
• Disconnect tools and cords when not in use.
• Ensure temporary lighting has protective bulb covers.
• Clearly label all power supplies, circuit boxes, and breaker panels.
• Use Ground Fault Interrupters (GFIs) on all jobsites.
