Empowering Future Professionals
In partnership with the University of Minnesota Summer Transportation Institute
This summer, time was set aside to host 32 students and advisors from the University of Minnesota’s National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI). Cemstone staff along with Dakota Aggregate staff hosted a 2.5 hour tour of the operations for the summer institute students. The students are part of a 2 weeklong summer camp that introduces them to a variety of aspects of the transportation/infrastructure industry. This is the firsttime they visited DA/Cemstone facilities. It is a free camp, and the students learn about science, engineering, and transportation in an interactive, hands-on environment.
The time at the facility consisted of presentations from Jim Grothaus, Cemstone, Elena Youngdale and Lucas Kaari, TCC Materials, and Matt Mettling from Dakota Aggregates. Students learned about the history of the UMORE Facility, the geology of the area, and basic principles of cement, concrete, and mining, and the Concrete Industry Management Program that is offered by South Dakota State University. Each student participated in a hands-on experience and a tour of the mining and ready-mix facilities at UMORE. Student requirements to participate in the camp include entering grades 7–9 (as of 2024–2025 school year), GPA of at least 2.0 and have an interest in engineering, science, transportation, or technology-related careers.
