A Stadium Built to Last
Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, U.S. Bank Stadium has become a defining feature of the city’s skyline and a proud home for the Minnesota Vikings since opening in 2016. This state-of-the-art facility was designed not only to offer fans an immersive game-day experience, but also to serve as a multipurpose venue for concerts, community events, and national sports championships. The stadium’s construction was a massive undertaking. Built on the site of the old Metrodome, the project began in 2013 and was completed in just under three years. The design, led by HKS Architects, features a distinctive translucent roof and angular lines inspired by Nordic culture. One of the most impressive engineering feats of the project was the use of concrete—over 100,000 cubic yards of it!
Concrete played a crucial role in building the stadium’s structural foundation, concourses, and seating areas. It helped support the venue’s massive footprint, which spans over 1.75 million square feet. With its durability and strength, concrete ensured the stadium could handle the foot traffic of 66,000+ fans every game day. A truly impressive structure!
