At the University of Wisconsin-Stout
At the University of Wisconsin–Stout in Menomonie, students and faculty are collaborating on a hands-on project to test low-carbon concrete at a campus bus stop. The goal is to evaluate a more sustainable concrete mix that reduces CO₂ emissions during production—a key step toward greener construction practices.
The project, a collaboration between academics and industry, involves the careful mixing and pouring of the low-carbon concrete to see how it performs in a real-life setting. By testing strength, durability, and drying time, participants aim to determine whether it can stand up to normal wear and environmental conditions.Â
Measuring these properties alongside traditional concrete benchmarks will help determine the material’s feasibility for broader use. If results are positive, this could pave the way for more sustainable infrastructure on campus—and potentially inspire similar efforts elsewhere—by reducing the construction sector’s carbon footprint.
