MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
At Cemstone, we understand the unique mental health challenges faced by those in the construction industry today. With high suicide rates, substance abuse issues, and a culture that often stigmatizes seeking help, it’s crucial to address these concerns head-on. Our mission is to raise awareness, provide support systems, and foster a culture where mental health is prioritized. Together, we can create a safer, healthier work environment for everyone.
• HIGH SUICIDE RATES: The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates among all industries, with 53.2 suicides per 100,000 workers. Men Suicide rate is 3.5x Women
• SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Construction workers are more likely to abuse substances such as alcohol, opioids, and other drugs. This not only affects their mental health but also increases the risk of accidents on the job.
• STIGMA AND TOUGHNESS CULTURE: The industry is predominantly male, and there is a cultural expectation of toughness. This can make it difficult for workers to seek help for mental health issues, as they may fear being perceived as weak.
• WORK ENVIRONMENT: Factors such as long hours, high stress, job insecurity, and separation from family can contribute to mental health issues. The cyclical nature of construction work can also lead to financial strain and instability.
Recognizing the symptoms or behaviors that may be signs of a mental health issue isn’t always easy, but it’s an important first step in getting you or someone else the help they may need. Some common warning signs include:
