Safety Starts from the ground Up
Fall prevention and proper site preparation are critical in the ready-mix concrete industry to ensure worker safety and prevent accidents.
In the construction industry, slips, trips, and falls are a leading cause of fatalities, accounting for approximately 38% of construction deaths. These incidents also result in a significant number of non-fatal injuries, with a higher rate in construction compared to other industries.

FALL PREVENTION
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
- Ensure workers wear appropriate fall protection gear, such as harnesses and lanyards when working at heights.
- Use non-slip boots to reduce the risk of slipping on wet or uneven surfaces.
GUARDRAILS AND BARRIERS
- Guardrails are essential on elevated work areas, platforms, and stairways.
- Use safety gates and barriers to prevent falls.
LADDER AND PLATFORM SAFETY
- Inspect ladders before use and ensure they are in good condition.
- Use stable, slip-resistant platforms for accessing ladders.
- Minimize the need for climbing by using mechanical assistance like catwalks or automated chutes.
HOUSEKEEPING AND SPILL CONTROL
- Keep work areas clean and free from obstructions.
- Immediately clean up spills of water, oil, or concrete mix to prevent slips and falls.
TRAINING AND AWARENESS
- Conduct regular safety training on fall hazards and prevention.
- Ensure workers are aware of fall risks when operating around wet concrete, which can create slippery surfaces.
SITE PREPARATION FOR SAFE OPERATIONS
GROUND STABILITY AND ACCESS ROUTES
- Ensure the site is level and compacted to prevent ready-mix trucks from tipping.
- Identify and mark safe travel paths for trucks and equipment.
PROPER DRAINAGE
- Ensure water runoff is controlled to prevent muddy or slippery conditions.
- Use gravel or other stabilizing materials on soft ground areas.
OVERHEAD AND UNDERGROUND HAZARDS
• Check for overhead power lines when positioning trucks and placing chutes.
• Ensure spotters are aware of truck heights when backing trucks onto the site.
• Identify underground utilities to prevent accidental damage.
TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SIGNAGE
• Establish clear traffic patterns for trucks, workers, and other equipment.
• Use spotters and warning signs to prevent collisions or equipment-related injuries.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
• Have a clear emergency response plan for accidents or falls.
• Ensure first aid kits and emergency contacts are readily available on-site.
