Portland Limestone Cement (PLC's)

As much 90% of the embodied carbon in one cubic yard of concrete originates from the cement.  Therefore, when it comes to creating sustainable concrete mixtures, we look to reduce the amount of cement within a mixture and/or utilize cements with a lower carbon footprint.  One such cement is Portland Limestone Cement or PLC.

PLC’s have been successfully utilized in the concrete industry for decades for residential, commercial and infrastructure projects and its use is increasing due to its reduction in carbon which can be as much as 10%.

Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM’s)

Cemstone has a long and storied past when it comes to using Supplementary Cementitious Materials.  These byproducts of other industries, help to not only reduce the embodied carbon of a particular mixture by lowering the cement content, they also improve the long-term performance of concrete.

This includes an increase in strength, durability and resistance to certain chemical attacks while also reducing the permeability of concrete, thereby making concrete last even longer, and that’s true resilience.

Aggregates

The performance characteristics of concrete are directly related to the interaction between the cement paste and the aggregates within the mixture. Cemstone utilizes a number of aggregate sources to create mixtures that meet the specific performance needs of a project.

In addition, we also have the ability to optimize the aggregate gradations which assist in lowering the amount of cementitious materials needed thus lowering the GWP of the mixture. For some projects utilize recycled aggregates which are created from returned concrete. These aggregates can be used in concrete as well as serve as base materials for buildings and pavements.

Admixtures

An admixture is defined as a liquid or powder, other than cementitious material, aggregate or water, designed to alter the performance of the plastic or hardened properties of the concrete mixture.

Since the concrete of today is continually advancing technically, concrete admixtures are  becoming critical in the design, production, and performance of concrete mixtures, especially as we look to make our mixtures less carbon intense.

At Cemstone we,  partner with the world’s best admixture suppliers who provide us with the latest in chemicals that allow us to create concrete’s that are easier to place and finish, increase strength faster, shrink less, are more durable, and ultimately have a lower GWP

Clarified Water

You need water to make concrete work.  Nobody says it must be fresh water and that’s exactly our approach.  Through the use of our self-contained washout systems on most every truck and our state-of-the-art weir systems at most plants, Cemstone has recycled and reused millions of gallons of water annually.

This clarified water is used to not only clean our trucks, but is reused in our concrete batches, under the parameters of ASTM C1602. Additionally, Cemstone is the only producer in Minnesota to have DOT approved weir sources of batch water.

DELIVERING SOLUTIONS

Delivering Solutions toward sustainability means designing actions that balance our global impact with creating materials that meet the needs of today, tomorrow and beyond. This requires innovative thinking, responsible use of resources, collaboration with all stakeholders, and measuring our results.  Concrete is recognized as a sustainable/resilient construction material due to its durability, versatility, and lifespan.  We fully embrace this and it’s represented in the time and energy we invest in making our concrete live up to that standard.

Efficient Reinforcement. Reduced Impact.

The use of concrete fibers not only improves the performance of concrete flatwork it also reduces the embodied carbon of interior slabs and exterior pavements when compared to an equivalent amount of traditional reinforcing steel.  Cemstone’s Resolve Concrete Fiber Reinforcement Matrix offers a wide variety of solutions for residential and commercial projects that result in better performing concrete that’s better for the environment.

Paving That Lasts Generations

It’s been well documented that concrete pavements last longer than other paving materials and require less maintenance, which is the definition of Resilience.   In addition, its lightness in color results in a lower heat island effect and promotes more efficient use of exterior lighting.  Combine that with modern mix and design optimization, concrete pavements are truly the sustainable solution for parking lots, city and county roads, and interstates.

Continuous Concrete. Lasting Results.

For owners of warehouses and maintenance garages, slab maintenance is a real concern from joints are an integral part of concrete design, they are also very noticable and provide the largest cost and impact on maintenance. With our Latitude interior slabs, Cemstone can effectively increase the joint spacing, greatly reducing the number of joints. Less joints create a better-looking slab, that is easier on  equipment and requires less maintenance.

Stronger Walls. Smarter Energy.

When it comes to buildings, energy savings and strength are the key in reducing the carbon life cycle of a structure.  By combining insulation with concrete’s mass effect, buildings can be created such that energy consumption is drastically reduced while also being able to resist manmade and natural disasters virtually eliminating the need for rebuilding.  This is true Resilience.  Cemstone offers a couple ways to create these types of structures, including Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF’s) and Thermomass.  In addition to the systems themselves, we also have experts on staff to guide you through the process of designing and building with these systems including selecting concrete mixtures with low embodied carbon resulting in a truly sustainable wall system.

Measured Strength. Optimized Results.

Technology and innovation are not just limited to the materials we use in creating greener concrete.  How we measure the performance of the concrete is also changing so that we can take full advantage of mixture optimization.  Although it’s been available for decades, concrete maturity is one such technology that is evolving.  Maturity is the relationship between a concrete’s hydration temperature, time and strength development.  Utilizing sensors inside the concrete, we can use maturity to monitor the in-place strength of concrete.  This aids in faster form removal and post tensioning of cable as well as opening pavements to traffic resulting in expedited schedules.  Cemstone’s Engineering Services group uses this technology on a regular basis with building and pavement projects including projects that utilize lower carbon concrete.

MEASURING RESULTS

To be truly sustainable, one needs to measure and evaluate the methods in which a company operates.  At Cemstone, we are continually gathering data about the concrete we produce in both the plastic and hardened state.  This data collection allows us to evaluate our mixtures and materials with the goal of optimization leading to concretes with a lower Global Warming Potential while still maintaining the performance characteristics a project demands.

Research & Development

THE LAB

Now more than ever, the concrete industry is looking to innovate when it comes to making concrete that is more resilient and sustainable.  New technologies are being developed every day that may result in concrete with little or no carbon footprint.

Cemstone is on that leading edge when it comes to evaluating these materials.  Utilizing our accredited testing and evaluation facility, called The Lab,  we are constantly evaluating the newest products on the market, including admixtures, cementitious materials or  waste products in an effort to make the highest performing concrete with the least impact on the environment.

In addition to our engineering staff, Cemstone has the largest group of certified Plant and Field Technicians in the upper Midwest. These skilled individuals are certified annually by the Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation for concrete and aggregate testing. In addition, many of these technicians are also certified by the American Concrete Institute for field testing of concrete.

Environmental Product Declarations

EPD’S

Cemstone is proud to have participated in the National Ready Mixed Concrete Associations (NRMCA) industry-wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Program as well as offer plant and mixture specific EPD’s at select production facilities.

An EPD outlines the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. Presented much like a food nutrition label, current EPDs detail the embodied carbon dioxide, among other data, for a specific concrete mixture based on the mix design, materials used, and the ready-mix plant—from cradle to the gate of the production facility.

Eventually, EPDs will be used to document the entire life cycle of a building material, including production, installation, building use, demolition, and even reuse. For concrete, this is exciting because concrete buildings and pavements last longer, require less maintenance, and, in the case of buildings, require less energy to operate. In addition, concrete can be recycled and reused as a base aggregate or repurposed into new concrete, making it a truly sustainable and resilient building material.
